Cultural Considerations for BIPOC Children Around Separation and Divorce
Divorce, separation and family rearrangements affect all children because their lives are changing and things become unpredictable. BIPOC children are also faced with historical and current family separations due to various institutional traumas and political gains. How can a play therapist consider the cultural stigmas and impacts on a changing family structure? How do we work with blended families, self-blame and shame around divorce?
Objectives
Recognize the impact of divorce, separation, & breakups on children and recognize the impact of racism on BIPOC families. How do high conflict relationships impact children?
Identify the psychological tasks of children or divorce (and separation) and how BIPOC families are resilient in their coping strategies. Find ways to collaborate with grown ups.
Explain why play therapy is effective in treating children and families in separated situations and cultural considerations to incorporate into practice. Describe techniques to use for assessment and treatment.
